J.D. DURKIN: So let's talk about preparing for the worst. You're a career coach. What would you say are the wisest steps that someone can take to get ahead of potentially being laid off at their company?

ALLISON TASK: So one of the best tips I ever heard, and I heard it from a client, he interviews every quarter. Every quarter. Now, what does that do? No matter how much he loves his job, he always makes sure he understands what else is going on in the industry. He's interviewing, even if he's not planning to leave just because, you never know. It's good for people to know you. It's good for you to be out there and see what's happening in the market. You can get complacent. You can get a little too comfortable, and you can start moving backwards if your company isn't moving forward fast enough. When companies are big and bloated, they just can't move that fast. So it's really nice to just stay out there, stay healthy and stay in the job market.
