Earnings from Mastercard  (MA) - Get Free Report, Visa  (V) - Get Free Report, American Express  (AXP) - Get Free Report and United Airlines  (UAL) - Get Free Report confirm the consumer is still willing to spend, Action Alerts PLUS co-portfolio manager Chris Versace said during the Daily Rundown.

The question now is where?

Versace said keep an eye on Mastercard's upcoming SpendPulse reports to get a read on what lies ahead as the holiday season approaches.

J.D. DURKIN: Let's talk Mastercard. What was your read on MA, and more importantly, what is it telling you about the consumer overall?

CHRIS VERSACE: So, you know, if we just go by the book, right, we look at the numbers-- better than expected revenue, better than expected EPS, upbeat comments on the consumer-- but I think the key here, JD, is always, what's the context, right?

We heard the same from Visa. We heard the same from American Express. We know from United and other airlines that people continue to travel. So, by and large, it appears that the consumer is continuing to shrug off the concerns that we have, and others have, about rising inflation. But you know, again, I think when we get more data, we're going to see exactly where they're spending. And as we look at other positions in the portfolio, that's going to be far more insightful.

So as great as Mastercard's report was for the September quarter, I really want to see their SpendingPulse reports for October and November so we can really get a bead on what's truly coming ahead.
